Nokia To Start Naming Phones

Posted on September 9, 2006 by adminNo Comments

Nokia are going to follow all the other mobile phone manufacturers like LG, Motorola and Samsung and start given their phones names instead of numbers. So no more Nokia E61, Nokia N93, Nokia 6234. Is it really just a marketing plot or as analysts have put it that consumers have a hard time recalling model numbers but have no trouble remembering iconic names like RAZR or Chocolate.

“What you will see coming from us in the future is not just a numbering system, you are going to start to see names that carry a meaning and are important to consumers,” Keith Pardy, head of marketing at Nokia.

Pardy also said they have been slow to introduce a thinner phone model

“We have been slow on the uptake. We are not happy that we are late with that, but we are working on it. But at the same time you have to be looking at what’s next,”

So maybe something to look out for over the coming months to see can they take on the like of LG and Motorola in the naming front

nokia n80 Internet editionThe Nokia N80 was introduced with the second wave of Nseries handsets in November of 2005, now Nokia have announced the N80 Internet Edition which has wireless LAN (WLAN), a browser, if needed support for internet calls, a 3-megapixel camera and quadband GSM WCDMA coverage along with an easy to use WLAN wizard, and a bucket load of other internet services which where not previously installed together on Nokia devices.

The N80 also comes with Nokia’s new Download! Client, Clicking on the Download! folder allows you to see what new applications are available for your multimedia computer. The fully featured Nokia Web Browser with Mini Map makes browsing the internet easy and you view the web pages just the same way that PC web browsers display web pages.

Nokia says the N80 Internet Edition will be available in two colours—pearl black and patina bronze—by mid-September. No pricing information is available: that’ll all depend on carriers and network operators.

Nokia 8800 Sirocco announced

Posted on August 29, 2006 by adminNo Comments

nokia 8800Nokia has finally announced the 8800 slider handset called the Sirocco, which sports an improved 2MP camera. So what’s the difference between this and the older model, well first it has a big indent on the front…big difference this will make!! but they have improved the camera which was a woefully inadequate VGA affair on the first model and now upped to a 2MP.

All the other features seem to be the same, with Bluetooth, MP3 ringtones and the rather lovely 262k-colour screen. As for price…I’ve no idea yet…. as for availability in Ireland…not sure yet…was this a useful review…. probably not!!

Nokia 1600 Review

Posted on August 20, 2006 by adminNo Comments

nokia 1600As I seem to be seeing this phone everywhere I decided to have a quick look at the entry-level phone, currently available from both Meteor and Vodafone at €49. This a good first phone, or if you’re just looking for some basics.
The Nokia 1600 keypad is reasonably easy to use, even thought the numbers being split into two sections.
There’s a nice 4-way scroll key and the interface is graphical, easy to use, and makes very good use of the quite small colour display.
The phone has MP3 ringtones 20 in total, but don’t expect too much from these. This phone is great basic phone, has excellent battery life, great price too. As somebody suggested to me this is not for posers but if you want a good reliable phone this could be the one.

Nokia 1600 Spec

* Simplified menu and navigation
* Integrated handsfree speaker
* Speaking alarm/clock
* Memory: up to 60 text messages
* Dual band
* Size: 104 x 45 x 17 mm
* Weight: 80g
* Talktime: 4 – 5 hours
* Battery standby: 285 – 450 hours

Nokia N93 Sim Free

Posted on August 17, 2006 by admin2 Comments

I’ve come across a number of Irish sites selling the N93 sim Free, the problem is you need about €750. So far I’ve no information if this will be available from any of the Networks a quick visit to Nokia’s website found that they added some spec’s and information on the N93 a few days ago, so I think this might happen soon.

Today Nokia announced the N93 has been awarded the European Media Phone of the Year 2006-2007 by the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA), Europe’s largest multimedia press organization. So with this type of award it’s seem’s they will introduce it across Europe…only time will tell

Nokia 6101

Posted on August 15, 2006 by adminNo Comments

nokia 6101As Meteor and O2 are offering the 6101 as a Pay As You Go and Speakeasy phone I decided to take a quick look at what’s on offer. The Nokia 6101 is a small sophisticated flip phone and I think Nokia are definitely making progress in the overall design of their clamshell phones.

The camera is a standard VGA, which has the ability to take self-portraits when using the external display as a viewfinder. It’s not the best feature as the display is very small, the camera does however have night mode but alas no flash. The video quality is really quit poor and basic and also, it doesn’t have a zoom.

Lack of Bluetooth maybe an issue for some people, as with all Nokia phones the user interface is easy to navigate.

Nokia 6101 Specs

* Voice recorder
* FM stereo radio with headset
* Voice Features: voice dialing, voice commands
* Integrated handsfree speaker
* MP3 ringtones / polyphonic ringtones
* Java™ games
* Caller ID with image
* Memory: 4.4 Mbytes
* Connectivity: USB, infra-red
* Triband
* Vibration alert
* Size: 85 x 45 x 24 mm
* Weight: 97g
* Talk time: 2 – 4 hours
* Battery standby: 150 – 350 hours

Overall the 6101 is a reasonable mid-range camera phone. But, if your thinking of buying have a look at the clamshell phones from Motorola or Samsung first.

Nokia 6234

Posted on August 11, 2006 by adminNo Comments

Nokia 6234The Nokia 6234 ia another Vodafone exclusive handset, I had a quick look at this model and found numerous personalisations such as vodaphone graphics and icons that have been integrated into the phone. You also get the start-up and shutdown graphics as well as tones to give the Vodafone feel if that’s the kind of thing you like. Personally I would like to be paid to be a walking advert but that’s another story…

Ok back to the phone…

Specs:

* MicroSD memory cards of up to 2 GB
* High quality sound through stereo speakers and 3D surround sound
* Stereo FM radio and Digital music player
* Stand-by Up to 340 h
* Talk time Up to 4 h

At this stage I think this model is about six month’s old but dont let that put you off, overall I like the design of the device. One gripe I had after using it would be the size of the call buttons and the two softkeys. They are both small and recessed, which makes them a bit hard to get to casually.

nokia 8800 sirocco

Nokia N93 Golf Edition

Posted on August 3, 2006 by admin1 Comment

n93 golfNokia have announced the availability of the Nokia N93 Golf Edition. In addition to usual N93 offering the special edition includes the Pro Session Golf application, and golf instruction CD. The Pro Session Golf application allows you to capture your golf swing using a golf specific video capture mode. The captured swing can then be compared with others using a split screen, played back frame by frame and analyzed with easy to use drawing tools.

I know lots of golf clubs in Ireland ban the use of Mobile’s while playing or in the club house so when could you use this?
