Happy Birthday

Posted on July 21, 2010 by Colm1 Comment

The MobileIreland website is 4 years old today. Back then I didn’t realise how many people would visit the site, I reckon so far we’ve had over 1 million visitors not bad for a small blog just talking about mobile phones.

I would like to thank everybody that had visited and hope over the next while to improve and make major changes to the site to improve your experience.

Regards
Colm

YouTube Mobile Gets A Revamp

Posted on July 8, 2010 by ColmNo Comments

YouTube announced yesterday that they have revamped their mobile website which is now HTML5 based. It’s mainly aimed at iPhone and Android handsets.

The site now offers higher-quality and has a few nice features of it like.

  • The UI now has larger, more touch-friendly elements
  • It now has some of the features and functionality from the .com site, like search query suggestions, the options to create playlists, the ability to designate “favorite,” “like” or “unlike” videos directly from your device
  • They promise faster improvements to it than to native apps

One other thing quite interesting to read is that their mobile site now plays 100 million videos per day.

If you are a prepay customer calls at the moment will cost you 5c these are now going to cost you 9c. (this is an 80% rise)

Pay monthly customers who exceed their monthly bundle minutes will now see the costs of making a call rise 35%.

Micro Sim Card

Posted on July 2, 2010 by ColmNo Comments

I just poped over to the Vodafone website and I see that they are now selling Micro Sim cards. The cards are ideal if you’re considering purchasing an iPad or any other smart phone or laptop that uses them.

We know over the past couple of years that there have been many people talking about the charges that mobile networks charge for data but it’s nice to see that they now have a couple of different packages available.

The first plan is for €20 per month which gives you 10 GB of data allowance, which to be honest it’s probably perfect for many people.

The second plan is one I particularly like in costs €25 but there is an unlimited data allowance.

Check out the full details on the plans over at Vodafone

Early Version of MeeGo 1.1 for Nokia Phones

Posted on July 1, 2010 by ColmNo Comments

Nokia have released a very early version of their new operating system MeeGo today. This is what they are calling a pre-alpha version which basically means it’s in very early in development.

In the video you can see the new touch user interface framework and you will see a demonstration of some of the applications working. However my guess is that a lot of this will actually change over time.

It’s expected that the first phone to have this new operating system will be the Nokia N9 . This should make it a really interesting device.

Is This the Nokia N8-01?

Posted on June 28, 2010 by ColmNo Comments

Some pitchers have started to emerge of the Nokia N8-01 but we are not 100% sure if these pictures are real or not. Apparently it will run on Symbian^3 OS and also come with an eight megapixel camera with dual LED flash. As you can see from the photograph above it has a full QWERTY keyboard. At this time we have no other specifications on what other features it might come with.

Posted on June 15, 2010 by ColmNo Comments

Pictured above we have Shane O’Brien, Services & Ovi Store Manager for Nokia Ireland interviewing Today FM DJ and blogger, Ray Foley, fashion blogger Laura Whiston, Internet entrepreneur Pat Phelan and Shane McAllister from Mobanode. I should have stayed to have a chat with Pat about mobile’s and gadgets as I love reading his blog but I wasn’t feeling to well and left early.

Anyway they got together to chat about the winning apps for the Nokia Apps competition and many other things.  The winners of Nokia’s Apps For Ireland competition where Hilary Weldon, a mother of five from Portarlington, Co. Laois, 26 year old Alan Duncan from Newbridge, Co. Kildare and 17 year old student, Lorcan O’ Mahoney, from the Navan Road. The competition, which attracted over 1,000 applications across three categories: sports, lifestyle and general, ran for eight weeks on Nokia’s Facebook page and prompted over 4,500 votes by the viewing public. The winning entries, which each collect a dream prize worth €3000, include a Cycling App in the Sports category, an App to help determine colour in the Lifestyle category and an App to help households and businesses with financial management in the General category.
