Windows Mobile 6.x not upgradeable to Windows Phone

Posted on March 2, 2010 by ColmNo Comments

There is a lot of expectation and a little bit of confusion over the Windows Phone 7 operating system. The confusion is around whether a phone running Windows Mobile 6.x can be upgraded to the new operating system when it is released. It seems as if Microsoft in the UK said last week that it is something for the hardware partners to think about.

Today, however, we hear news “because we have very specific requirements for Windows Phone 7 Series, the current phones we have right now will not be upgradeable.” Natasha Kwan, General Manager for Microsoft’s Mobile Communications Business in the Asia-Pacific region.

Doing a little bit of investigation it seems as if many phones will not be upgradable because they do not have the back, home and search hardware keys required by the new operating system. If this is the reason for example the HTC HD2 pictures of both will not qualify to be upgraded to the new operating system but will however be upgradable to windows mobile 6.5.3.

I’m sure over the next couple of weeks and months it’ll become clearer and we will have more information on this.

The phone that was unveiled is an LG smart phone which is a pre-production units. It was shown up in The Engadget Show over this weekend.

As you can see from the photograph it has a sliding QWERTY keyboard. It’s also believed that it comes with a five megapixel camera and a touchscreen display. I’m sure it can this model goes into production it will be slightly different. Should start to hear more information about the new operating system in the next couple of weeks/months. But, we are not really expecting to see many phones on the market place until towards the end of the year.

Ease of Use features

* Capacitive touchscreen support
* Platform to enable multitouch
* Touch controls throughout system (no need for stylus)
* Consistent Navigation
* Horizontal scroll bar replaces tabs (think settings>system>about
screen)
* Magnifier brings touch support to legacy applications
* Simplified out-of-box experience with fewer steps
* Drag and drop icons on Start Screen

IE Browser Performance

* Page load time decreased
* Memory management improved
* Pan & flick gestures smoothed

Quality and Customer Satisfaction features

* Updated runtime tools (.NET CF 3.5, SQL CE 3.1)
