Nokia 6216 Announced

Nokia today announced the 6216 Classic. As you can see from the photograph it is a bar style phone that comes with a number of features including FM radio, 3G, microSD card support up to 8 GB. It also comes with the camera looks looking at the Nokia press release they have not told us what size it is.

One of the new features that the phone comes with what we are going to be hearing a lot more of over the next couple of years is NFC technology. This stands for Near Field Communication and is basically a short range high frequency wireless communications technology which will enable data information to be exchanged over a short distance roughly about 4 inches.

Nokia have enabled this NFC technology on the SIM card

“The Nokia 6216 classic will be amongst the first commercial devices in the market complying with operator requirements using the SIM card in connection to secure transactions with Near Field Communications,” says Jeremy Belostock, head of near field communications at Nokia.

“The launch of the Nokia 6216 classic SIM-based NFC handset is a great step forward for payment and ticketing services,” says Alex Sinclair, the Chief Technology Officer of the GSM Association.

I’m sure it will only be a matter of time before we see other mobile phone manufacturers like Sony Ericsson, LG, Samsung, Motorola and I’ll do that makes starting to introduce this technology into their new mobile phones.

I was kind of wondered why they would not use Bluetooth instead of introducing another wireless technology. Apparently there are significant advantages of NFC compared to Bluetooth and one of these is the amount of time it takes to establish a connection.

And I am sure who’ll be hearing more about this in the coming months and over the next year.
