The New Motorola MOTOFONE
Motorola have announced another new phone this week, the MOTOFONE. The candy bar styled phone is the thinnest in Motorola’s lineup at approximately 9mm (.35″) thick, and is said to be part of the SCPL (”scalpel”) platform. Motorola hopes the GSM capable MOTOFONE F3 will be a cost effective, introductory phone for new users but still provide a handset that makes a statement with style and design.
* Electrophoretic Display
* Redesigned UI
* 16.5 days of standby time
* 7 hours of talk time
* Speakerphone
The phone is expected to be available in Q4 2006. No pricing information has been provided at this time.
More Mobile Phones
Research had predicted that more than 1.5 billion mobile phones will be shipped worldwide by 2011.
The research firm Analysis suggests this will happen as mobile phones evolve into three broad types.
*Comprising voice-centric
*Converged-function
*Specialist handsets
‘The handset market is transforming as traditional voice-centric devices diversify with the incorporation of a range of multimedia functions. Future handsets will develop into voice-centric, converged-function and specialist categories, driven by increasingly segmented consumer demand,’ said report author Dr Yanli Suo-Saunders.
Vodafone Cheaper Bills
Vodafone Ireland says its 2 million customers are paying 5% less each month after a series of price cuts.
The average subscriber pays €48.80 each month compared to €51.40 this time last year.
Irish mobile phone users are paying the highest monthly charges in Europe. According to the telecoms regulator, Irish users pay around 50% more than the EU average each month.
Motorola Gold RAZR V3i
First seen in December 2005 only one thousand gold RAZR V3i phones where produced and sold exclusively at Dolce & Gabbana boutiques worldwide. This model is now available in the Carphone Warehouse (maybe other stores but I’ve not seen it)
The Motorola V3iM mobile phone takes Motorola’s popular RAZR flip design, adds an expandable memory, then goes a step further by including iTunes compatibility.
The result is a music player that’s delightfully easy to use. Press the Music key - that’s what the ‘M’ at the end of the name stands for, in case you wondered - and you’re able to browse through playlists to choose your favourite songs. Just as importantly, Apple’s iTunes software also makes it easy to transfer songs from your PC. In fact, the Motorola V3iM is a perfect companion whether you already have an iPod or if you’re just joining the digital music revolution.
Take a break from your favourite tunes and you’ll discover a 1.23 megapixel camera for photos and videos. The large high-resolution colour display will act as a full-screen viewfinder or, if you prefer, you can use the smaller external screen for self-portraits.
In addition, this ultra-slim camera phone offers you Java games, MP3 ringtones, a personal organiser, voice-activated calling and quad-band international coverage. But we reckon it’s the music features that’ll convince most people. The Motorola V3iM has taken the mobile music player and transformed it into a svelte style icon.
Features of the Motorola Gold RAZR V3i include:
Weight (g): 95g
Talktime (Up to): 7hrs
Standby time (Up to): 12 days
Operating frequency: Quad band
Display size: 176 x 220 pixels
Display colour depth: 262,000
Address book memory: 2000 entries

Mobile phone threats to children
The European Commission has told the mobile phone industry that they must cooperate with them and look at the potential risks of children being exposed to bullying and porn, it was urged today.
They have launched a public consultation to look at issues such as assessing harmful or illegal content, bullying through abusive messages or photos, grooming and the risk of unexpectedly high costs from downloading ringtones or pictures.
They have also said it would be seeking the contributions from parents, child safety organisations, consumer groups, mobile phone companies and regulators before the October deadline.
The commission stated the consultation aimed to gather factual information and get views from different stakeholders and assess the types of risks faced by children in their use of mobile content services, the solutions that exist and the scope for further action.
“Mobile phones are part of our daily lives, not only for adults but also for teenagers and increasingly for younger children,” said Viviane Reding, commissioner for information society and media.
